The Tierney Coat Of Arms Story

Tierney stems from the Irish O Tihearna meaning ‘lord,’ and the most important of the Tierney clans were originally lords of Carra in Co. Mayo. There are many stories of their particularly strong feelings of family pride. The name is now distributed throughout Ireland widely in Connaught and Munster, rarely in Ulster outside Donegal. Alhough there is no clearly defined area of high concentration they are associated chiefly with the counties Galway, Limerick and Tipperary. Very early records speak of Fearnan O’Tierney or O’Tierney’s country referring probably to the territory in upper Ormond. By 1273 Florence O’Tierney was Bishop of Kilfenora and a century later Cornelius O’Tierney became Bishop of Kerry. Another O’Tierney name is commemorated by a monument in Stz Nicholas church in Galway, dated 1580. George Tierney (1761-1830) was a well One of the most intriguing episodes in the family history is that of the brothers Matthew (1776-1845) and Edward Tierney (1788-1856) who both came from Limerick. From humble beginnings as the sons of a small farmer they both became remarkably successful. Sir Matthew began his career as apprentice to an apothecary at Rathkeale and ultimately became not only one of the leading doctors in England but also physician in ordinary to the King. Sir Edward took a special patent in order to inherit his brother’s baronetcy. He later became crown solicitor for Ulster, and under the will of Lord Egmont for whom he acted as agent, inherited the vast Egmont estates. It was not after the death of sir Edward that the estates diverted to the Egmonts.
