The Sheehan Coat Of Arms Story
Read the intriguing transcription of the text illustrated on the Sheehan family history parchment:
A great many people in Ireland bear the name Sheehan or Sheahan. Of these two forms Sheehan is the more closely related to the original in Irish which is O Siodhachain. There is some debate among Celtic scholars about the precise maning of this but it has been suggested that it is deived from Siodhach, meaning peaceful. There has been a southernly drift from their original territory in county Limerick to the present-day concentration rather south of this in Kerry and Cork. The connection with Connaught is now slender although in medieval times there was a sept or clan known as O’Sheehan. They held the hereditary office of trumpeter to the leading chief. Canon Patrick Augustine Sheehan and his contemporary in the nineteenth century, Richard Alphonsus Sheehan, Bishop of Waterford, were both distinguished priests & authors. The latter was also a firm supporter of the Irish language. John Sheehan (1812-82), author and journalist, represented ‘The Constitutional’ in Paris and Madrid but is best known for his involvement with the comet club in Dublin, responsible for producing a satirical weekly paper -the 'Comet’ - which exercised considerable influence in the two years it was published. In the nineteenth century, particularly, large numbers of Irishmen had little choice but to leave behind the poverty unemployment of their native land and take a chance on what the New World could offer. Among them was Patrick Sheehan, his voyage of discovery was on a ship called 'Sardinia,’ sailing from Liverpool to New York on the sixth of February 1847.
