About this Piece
Celebrate your Irish heritage with this statue of the great Grace O'Malley. Born in 1530 as Gráinne Ni Mhaille, Gráinne was queen of Umhaill (Connacht) in the west of Ireland, and is known for being a fearsome trader and pirate. When her two sons and brother were taken captive by the English governor of Connacht, she travelled to England to appeal for their release and request the removal of the English governor. Queen Elizabeth agreed on the condition that Gráinne end her rebellion and piracy against England. When the Queen eventually reneged on the agreement, so did Gráinne, proving herself to be a powerful foe. She died in 1603 and is buried on her family land on Clare Island. This beautiful bronze sculpture of her is an exciting gift from Ireland and makes for a bold piece of Irish home décor.
