The Plunkett Coat Of Arms Story
Read the intriguing transcription of the text illustrated on the Plunkett family history parchment:
Plunkett is one of those names which, although not Gaelic in origin, is now only found in Ireland or where Irish stock has carried it. It was first brought to Ireland by the French during the Anglo-Norman invasion of the 12th century. The final form was arrived at via a corruption of ‘Blanchet,’ derived from ‘blanc’ meaning white. For seven centuries the name has been particularly associated with the Dublin-Meath—Lough area and representatives of it have figured in every aspect of Irish life. Various branches of the family have also been well represented in the aristocracy; as well as Baron Plunkett there are three other venerable peerages: those of Fingall, Lough and Dunsany. One of the earliest Plunketts recorded was Thomas Plunkett of Louth, Chief justice of the Common Pleas in 1316. Many others have been notable in the church. William Conyngham Plunket was a well known Archbishop of Dublin; Patrick Joseph Plunkett, (1738-1827) originally a professor became Bishop of Meath. The most famous and one of the greatest of all Irishmen was the Blessed Oliver Plunkett (1629-1681), Archbishop of Armagh at a most dangerous time, he was known as a man of peaceful life and untiring effort and his tragic end was one of the saddest episodes in Irish history. Other notable representatives of the name include Thomas Plunket (1716-1777), general in the Austrian army, John Hubert Plunkett (1801-1860), the Australian statesman from Roscommon, and Sir Horace Plunkett (1854-1932), founder of the cooperative movement to Ireland.
