The Phelan Coat Of Arms Story
Read the intriguing transcription of the text illustrated on the Phelan family history parchment:
Both Phelan and Whelan are Anglicised forms of the same Gaelic surname O Faolain. This too has variations including O Faoileain and O Haolain. The ancestors of the present holders of the name were an important sept in the southeast of Ireland. Their chiefs were princes of the Decies before the Anglo-Norman invasion of the 12th century. There has been a much more recent self-styled ‘O’Phelan, prince of the Decies’ but his claims are considered spurious by the genealogical office. Another branch was established in the southwest part of Kilkenny. It is hardly surprising that the greatest concentration of the name in modern times, apart from in Dublin itself, is also in the southeast of Ireland, with a preponderance of Phelans in counties of Waterford and Kilkenny, and Whelans in Wexford and Carlow. A John Phelan was Bishop of Ossory at the time of James II. More recently Edward Joseph Phelan was director-general of the International Labour Office of Co. Waterford and Frederick Ross Phelan a distinguished Canadian soldiers. Phelans were well represented, no doubt, in the mass emigration of the 19th century, poverty and unemployment were so bad that thousands of men and women left in the hope of a better life in the United States of America. Just a glance at some of the passenger lists of the time reveal William and Patrick Phelan sailing on the ‘Belisarius’ from Dublin to New York on 6th July, 1811. Margaret Phelan aboard the ‘Huntress’ arrived at New York on 24th June in the same year, and Thomas Phelan of Kilkenny sailed on the ‘Shamrock’ that same summer. James Phelan (1824-1892) was one of the early pioneers of the west. His son James Duval Phelan (1861-1930) became a senator and mayor of San Francisco.
