The O'More Coat Of Arms Story

Read the intriguing transcription of the text illustrated on the O'More family history parchment:

O’Moore or Moore as it has often become is very frequently found in Ireland and includes two distinct groups: those who are of Gaelic-Irish origin and those of Anglo-Norman extraction. Apart from the big cities, the greater numberare to be found in Ulster in Munster.  The latter group rapidly established themselves in Munster after the Anglo-Norman invasion. They are known as De Mor in Irish, a phonetic version of the English name which is derived from ‘Moor’ meaning ‘an enclosed stretch of heathland’ In Burke’s ‘London Gentry of Ireland’ of 1912, twelve families of Moore are recorded and of these all but one claim to have come from England and Scotland.  The Irish branch is known as O’Mordha meaning stately or noble. The ancestor Mordha after whom they are named is claimed to be twenty-first in descent from Conal Cearnach, the most distinguished of the heroes of the Red branch. As the foremost sept or clan of the seven septs of Leix, the other six had to pay tribute to them. St. Fintan is claimed as their protector. A number of the Leix O’Mores fought in France in the 18th century. Murtagh O’more went to France in 1691 & his descendants became Lords of Valmont. Several famous leaders were provided in the struggle against the Tudors including Rory O’More (d.1557) & his son Rory Og O’more (d.1578).  Many others who bear the name have long histories. The ancestors of the Earls of Drogheda, whose family name is Moore came to Ireland in the time of the first Queen Elizabeth. The Moore’s of Barmeath settled there in the 14th century and it seems likely that the line of Saint Thomas Moore goes back to them.
