The O'Hara Coat Of Arms Story
Read the intriguing transcription of the text illustrated on the O'Hara family history parchment:
This is the English form of the Gaelic name O'Heaghra which means 'descendant of Eaghra.’ The latter was of the royal family of Olioll Ollam, King of Munster, and was chief of Leyny in Sligo. In the mid-fourteenth century the group which had inherited his name split into two under the leadership of two chiefs- O'Hara Boy, derived from the word ‘Juide’- tawny, and O’Hara Reagh, from ‘Riaghach’- grizzled. The former was seated at Collooney, the latter at Ballyhara, which means 'homestead of the O'Haras’. A branch also migrated to County Antrim. The book of the O’Hara’ a celebrated manuscript which records the history of the early chieftains, still exists today. During the eighteenth century, the ancient aristocratic line of O'Haras became powerful landlords possessing more than twenty one thousand acres on estates at Cooper's Hill and Annaghmore. One family became Barons Tyrawley in 1706. The sept has produced several eminent men, not least of whom was Kane O'Hara, born in 1712. He wrote ‘Midas,’ a burlesque, which proved a spectacular hit with audiences in Dublin and London. Many nineteenth century O’Haras from emigrant families gained fame in America, the Reverend William O'Hara was the first bishop of Scranton. Theodore O’hara was a well-known soldier and journalist, endowed with a remarkable Irish gift for oratory. Maureen O'Hara, from Dublin, has made the name famous throughout the world.
