The O''Halloran Coat Of Arms Story

Read the intriguing transcription of the text illustrated on the O'Halloran family history parchment:

This is the Anglicised form of the Gaelic name O’Hallmburain, derived from the word 'Allmhurach’ which means pirate or stranger from overseas. The name originally belonged to two separate septs, one in Galway, the other in Clare. It was the first who were the most prominent in ancient times, being lords of the lonely wildernesses which stretched to the west of Galway city and Lough Corrib. This territory was called Clann Fearghaile and the sept's motto was thus ‘Clann Fearghaile Abu.’ They are recorded among the powerful Gaelic  aristocracy of Western Ireland in the ‘Composition Book of Connaught' written in 1585.   The O’Hallorans of Clare were related to the McNamaras and originally dwelt at Ogonnelloe on the beautiful south west shores of Lough Berg; they subsequently drifted southwards into Limerick. It is this sept which has borne all the more famous men of the name. Two eighteenth century brothers, Sylvester and Joseph Ignatius, won reknown in entirely unrelated spheres. The former was a surgeon and eye specialist, the latter a professor of Philosophy at Bordeaux. Sir Joseph O'Halloran, who was born in 1763, pursued a long and distinguished career with the British army, while still maintaining strong interests in Limerick. Of his eight sons, also in the service, Thomas and William, who were based in Australia, became the most well known. Another O'Halloran, who ended up in Australia as headmaster of a school in Sydney, was Laurence Hines O'Halloran, who had been transported there following a roving life as poet and adventurer.
