The O'Dwyer Coat Of Arms Story

Read the intriguing transcription of the text illustrated on the O''Dwyer parchment:

This important, staunchly Irish sept, held sway in the lonely mountainous area of central Tipperary called Kinamanagh. Their name, O’Duibhair in Gaelic means ‘descendant of Duibhair,’ and throughout the strife-ridden Tudor and Cromwellian times, the records bear witness to many examples of their dogged resistance to invaders. As late as 1798, Michael Dwyer defied government forces for five years before his voluntary surrender and subsequent transportation to Australia. More recent O’Dwyers have stamped their name on differing professions. Joseph O’Dwyre, born in 1841, of an immigrant family in Cleveland, pioneered the use of intubation to combat asphyxia in the treatment of diphtheria. William O’Dwyer was essentially a self-made man, who, emigrating to America in 1910, from county Mayo, began his extraordinary career as a labourer and barman and eventually became mayor of New York and United States ambassador to Mexico. His younger brother, Paul, also entered politics. The Bishop of Limerick during the upheavals of 1916 was also of this sept; the Reverend Edward O’Dwyer was much loved by the Irish people when, showing shades of his ancestor’s defiance, he refused to bend his principles in the face of powerful opposition.
