The O'Connolly Coat Of Arms Story

 Most of the people bearing the surname are descended from three Gaelic septs- the O Conghalaigh of Monaghan, the O Coingheallaigh of Munster, and another sept in Connaught belonging to the larger ethnic group, the Ui Maine. It was the first of these septs which was most prominent, in early times, as it had been one of the ‘Four Tribes of Tara,’ whose ancient worship and inaugural ceremonies centred around the hill of Tara in county Meath. They were driven northward to Monaghan by the Anglo-Norman invasion of the twelfth century. As late as 1591 the group still had a chief of the name- Tirlog O’Connola. Today the name is still found in its ancient domains, Galway, Monaghan and Cork, but two outstanding O’Connollys came from Meath families. William Connolly, member of parliament for county Kildare, and speaker in the house of commons was regarded as the richest man in Ireland in his time. It was at his funeral in 1729 that the custom of wearing Iinen scarves came into being and was perpetrated to help the linen trade. This illustrious name has occurred in different circles over the world. The Rev. John Connolly became Archbishop of New York at the close of the eighteenth centuryz Henry Connolly, born in Kentucky in 1800, of an immigrant family was a pioneer and the first elected governor of New Mexico. James Connolly who was executed in 1916, helped to organise the Irish transport and general workers union in Dublin. Pierce Francis Connolly was a sculptor of some note. ‘Little Mo’ Connolly made the name famous in sports when she became a tennis sensation in 1950 at only 16.
