The Moran Coat Of Arms Story
Read the intriguing transcription of the text illustrated on the Moran family history parchment:
Moran is a name frequently found now in all counties but it is concentrated. As it has been for a very long time, mainly in the Connaught Counties of Mayo, Galway, Roscommon and Leitrim. There were two quite distinct septs or clans whose descendants ultimately came to be called by the anglicised form of Moran. Both held territory in this area. The first, Ó'Moram, which is possibly derived from MÓR meaning big, were chiefs of Ca Mayo and lived near Balliha. The others were known as ÓMoghrain, or ÓMughrain in earlier times. One of their leaders was chief of Criffon in Co. Galway; another headed a powerful family in Co. Roscommon with their estate newar Ballintober. One of the distinguished Morans was General James O'Moran (1739-1794) who, along with a great many of his countrymen fought bravely in Dillon's Irish Regiment of the French Army. Despite his brilliance as a soldier he was a viction of the Guillotine after the Revolution, Michael Moran (1794-1871) was a famous Dublin character - the street singer known as Zozimus. The 19th century was the period of mass emigration from Ireland and many Morans looked for opportunity in other countries. Consequently we find the Most Rev. Patrick Moran, a bishop in South Africa and New Zealand and Cardinal Patrick Moran in Australia. Many of those who left the poverty and unemployment of Ireland were bound for the U.S.A. Sometimes families or even whole communities set sail together for the New World. Such a group left Roscommon for Liverpool in 1847. On 16 September they sailed for New York in the 'Metoka', among them John Moran, 56, Winifred, 44, and Francis, John and Catherine, aged 7, 15, and 10.
