The McCabe Coat Of Arms Story
Read the intriguing transcription of the text illustrated on the McCabe family history parchment:
This family originally came from the Western Isles of Scotland in 1350. The prefix ‘Mac’ meaning ‘son of’ was added to a father’s name or occupation, in Gaelic, to form a permanent surname. The migrants settled in the ancient territory of Breffny, which is now Cavan and West Leitrim, and formed a sept or clan in the traditional Irish manner. Their chief was known as the ‘constable of the Breffnys’ and their estates extended into the gently undulating hills of County Monaghan as well as County Cavan. To this day the majority of McCabes in Ireland live in these areas. Most of the land which belonged to the more prominent families bearing this name was fortified after the Battle of Anghrim in 1691; however, there are several McCabes worthy of mention. Not least was a Bard of Cavan, Cathaoir McCabe, who died in 1740, and who was a great friend of another famous poet-Turlogh O’ Carolan. Bernard McCabe was an author of some note during the nineteenth century; but the most well-known bearer of this name was the American Bishop, Charles Caldwell MaCabe, the grandson of an immigrant from Tyrone, who became that familiar figure in the American civil war known as ‘Chaplain McCabe’.
