The McAuliffe Coat Of Arms Story

Read the intriguing transcription of the text illustrated on the McAuliffe family history parchment:

This small but ancient family area branch of the powerful McCarthy sept or clan who held sway in the inhospitable reaches of the area known as Desmond or South Munster. The Gaelic prefix ‘Mac’ which meant ‘son of’ was often added to a father’s name or occupation to form a surname- in this case, Mac Amhlaoibh, or son of Auliffe. Their chief's stronghold was at Castle McAuliffe, near newmarket, on the Eastern Foothills of the brooding Mullaghareirk mountains. The name is now rarely found in Ireland outside Munster. Michael McAuliffe who died in Spain in 1720 fighting as a Colonel in the Spanish Army, was perhaps the last of the chiefs of the sept although some would claim that this position was held by a minor official at Kenmare in 1840. The most famous member of the family was undoubtedly Joseph Ollife, a French physician, born in Cork in 1808. The nineteenth century in Ireland was characterized by emigration on a massive scale. The Act of Union in 1800 had the effect of opening up vulnerable home industries to excessive competition from English factories with the result that unemployment swelled. On top of this came the terrible famine of the 1840s. In 1847 alone it is believed that almost 250,000 died of starvation and 200,000 fled to America. Inevitably, amongst all these, there were some representatives of the McAuliffe's. Some McAuliffes appear on old passenger lists: one such entry concerns Denis McAuliffe (28). Johanna (24), Michael (22), and Robert (17), who sailed on the ‘Columbus’ to New York on 7th September 1840..
