Leary Family Crest

Beautifully arranged in this parchment and created by Edmond McGrath (RIP) in the 1970s and only rediscovered after 40 years in safe storage, we bring you a very special illustration that encompasses symbols of your Irish tribal heritage. The owner of this name is by definition a child of Ireland in culture and in blood!

On this A1 (23.4 x 33.1 inch) sized parchment, your special Irish Coat of Arms is deservedly embellished by all the many ancient Celtic inspirations of Irish artists, scholars and architects. At the centre you see the backdrop of the Kerry landscape with her scenic Killarney lakes, whilst other bordering elements are the craftsmanship of sculptors and builders who managed to create works of art with the most basic of tools. With this parchment you will see your family name as an integral part of the Irish story which will forever remain an integral part of Irish heritage.

This parchment can be an heirloom for many generations yet to come as your family thrive into the future making their own mark on history as your ancestors did. Your unique Irish family Coat of Arms is a wonderful creative reminder that your name has an Irish tribal identity with its origin, derivatives and impact on the culture of Ireland and worldwide. All of this written in Celtic calligraphy. The design inspiration is about Ireland’s story and how your family have made a mark on Ireland history.

The Leary Coat Of Arms Story

Read the intriguing transcription of the text illustrated on the Leary family history parchment:

When St. Patrick was in Ireland in the 5th century the King of the time was Laoghaire. The town of Dunlaoghaire, near Dublin, is named after him. It was six hundred years later that the surname O’ Laoghaire or O’Leary came into being, certainly, O’ Learys have always been associated with Co.Cork. In common with many of the ancient Gaelic septs or clans, the Norman invasion of the 12th century caused them to move from their original territory. In the case of the O’Learys’ strongbow and his forces only displaced them from Corca Laoidhe in South West Cork to Inchegeela in the same county. This was a remote land with the Kerry mountains immediately to the west of them. Here they ruled for many years as chiefs under the powerful Muskerry McCarthys. In a 1654 survey of the barony of Muskerry, thirty-four out of a hundred & three landowners were O’ Learys, there are still a great number of O’ Learys in Ireland the vast majority of them are or have been recently associated with Co.Cork. There are two places called Ballyleary in that county. Many O’Leary was involved in military life. Some of them Fought in Munsteer itself, others, as a result of the difficulties of the times, took their services abroad. Mahon O’ Leary went to Spain with O’ Aquila after the Battle of Kinsale in 1601, a forerunner of the many Wild Geese who followed him to Europe in the 16th&17th centuries. O’ Learys have been represented in almost every sphere of life. Father Peter O’ Leary- Peadar O’ Laoghaire- was called ‘the greatest living master of Irish prose’. In America, the remarkable Daniel O’ Leary (1846-1933) held the world record for long-distance walking. The prefix ‘O’ disappeared in the period of Gaelic suppression and, unlike some names, has not been revived.
