The Flanagan Coat Of Arms Story

Read the intriguing transcription of the text illustrated on the Flanagan family history parchment:

This name is derived from the word ‘flann’ meaning ‘red’ or ‘ruddy’, and the sept is of ancient origin. It seems from an O’Connor called Flanagan, whose line henceforth held the position of stewards to the main branch of the powerful O’Connor family, Kings of Connaught. It was a hereditary post, and one of considerable importance in Gaelic times. This most prominent O’Flanagan family owned land between Mantua and Elphin in County Roscommon; as for the others, they were widespread throughout the Western Counties of Mayo, Galway and Clare, and it is here that their descendants remain to this day. Flanagans are also found, however, in two other parts of Ireland, where two other distinct septs of this name flourished until the seventeenth century-in Tooran in North West Fermanagh, and in Ballybrit in Offaly. An early thirteenth century Bishop of Elphin, Donough O’ flanagan, was famed for his hospitality and piety; nineteenth century O'Flanagans achieved fame through writing. Roderick Flanagan founded the ‘Sydney Chronicle’, Thomas Flanagan wrote ‘the history of the Church in England’, James Roderick Flanagan wrote extensively on Irish subjects. In America, John Flanagan, born in 1865, was a sculptor of note, whose work includes the design of the United States quarter dollar portraying George Washington.
