The Coffey Coat Of Arms Story

Read the intriguing transcription of the text illustrated on the Coffey family history parchment:

The Gaelic form of this ancient name is O’ Cobhtaigh. It came originally from the word ‘Cobthach’ which meant victorious and is therefore probably a reference to the early tribal warfare which took place long before surnames became permanent in the course of the eleventh century. During the Middle Ages several branches of this sept flourished in different parts of Ireland. The most important of these was established in the Rocky in Leos and deep wooded valleys of South West Cork, where they shared a common ancestor, namely Lughaidh Laidhe, with the indomitable O’ Briscolls, and were thus members of the Corca Laoidhe Clan. In this area, where Coffey is pronounced’ Cowney', the place Bunocowney is named after them and there are still many Coffeys still to be found there. Descendants of a second branch of the sept related to the O’ Maddens of Ul Maine are now found in county Roscommon. A third sept, celebrated bards of bygone days was located in the lonely moors of Westmeath, but its descendants have long since dispersed. The most prominent of the seven Coffeys who were Gaelic poets was the sixteenth century bard Dermot O’ Coffey. Charles Coffey, born in 1700, was an actor who inspired by the Gaelic tradition, first introduced Irish Airs into one of his plays. More recently George Coffey descended from the Coffey of Munster, became a famous archaeologist; he died in 1916. This surname is now found in many parts of Irelnd, as shown by the fact that the place name Rathcoffey in both countries of Leix and Kildare.
