The Purcell Coat Of Arms Story
Read the intriguing transcription of the text illustrated on the Purcell family history parchment:
In Irish Puirseil, this name was originally the Anglo-Norman word ‘porcel,’ derived from the Latin ‘porcus.’ Although the name came to Ireland with the Normans it was not until some time after the beginning of the invasion in 1172. When the Purcells did arrive they were closely associated with the powerful Butler family, founders of the Ormonde dynasty. They are now mostly found in the adjacent counties of Kilkenny and Tipperary. In the area around Thurles in county Tipperary, fought over by Norsemen and Normans, there are many ruined castles, among which is the former seat of the head of the Purcell family, the castle of Loughmoe. He was given the title of Baron of Loughmoe by the first Lord of Ormonde but this was never officially recognised. In common with many old Irish families the Purcells were notable both for the representatives in the church and in the military sphere. A number were Bishops of Ferns and Waterford, abbots of Holy Cross and Saint John’s, Kilkenny. At least two Purcells figured in the history of Limerick, a major-general Purcell was so prominent in the defense of this town in 1651 that he was specifically excluded from the generally favorable terms granted to his contemporaries. Colonel Nicholas Purcell was a close associate of Patrick Garffield, hero of the revolutionary wars, and they were both involved in negotiating the famous Treaty of Limerick in 1691. Partly as a result of this, many Purcells subsequently served as ‘wild geese’ in Europe with regiments such as Purcell’s horse for Claire’s dragoons. Other notable Purcells were Richard Purcell, the eighteent century engraver and John-Baptiste Purcell (1800-1883) archbishop of Cincinnati.
