The O'Shea Coat Of Arms Story

Read the intriguing transcription of the text illustrated on the O'Shea family history parchment:

The largest concentration of O’Sheas is still to be found in Kerry where they were known in the Irish as O’Seaghdha or descendent of Seaghdha. The word translates us hawklike, with the consequent implications of fearless, stately, majestic. From the twelfth century onwards their numbers were more significant than their power, and a number of their leading members moved on to county Tipperary. We know that in 1381 for instance, there was an Odoneus O’Shee as Lord of Sheesland. The movement continued towards the east so that in 1499 not only was Robert Shee the sovereign of Kilkenny but the Shees as a group were known as the most influential members of the so-called ten tribes of Kilkenny- incidentally the only Gaelic name amongst them. The forms Shee and O’Shee tend to be found mainly in this area and seem to be derived from an Anglicised pronunciation of Shea. Even in the nineteenth century, the member of Parliament for Kilkenny was Sir William Shee, also notable as the first Catholic judge in Ireland since 1690. In line with the general trend, many O’Sheas made their fortunes and reputations outside Ireland. Captain Robert O’Shea fought with Bonnie Prince Charlie at Culloden and with others of the same name, was a distinguished officer in France. Sir Martin Archer Shee (1769-1850) was president of the Royal Academy in London for twenty years. In America John Dawson Gilmary O’Shea, the notable historian was the son of a leading figure in Irish-American affairs who emigrated to the United States of America in 1815.
