At the centre you see the backdrop of the Kerry landscape with her scenic Killarney lakes, whilst other bordering elements are the craftsmanship of sculptors and builders who managed to create works of art with the most basic of tools. With this parchment you will see your family name as an integral part of the Irish story which will forever remain an integral part of Irish heritage.

This parchment can be an heirloom for many generations yet to come as your family thrive into the future making their own mark on history as your ancestors did. The McGowan Coat Of Arms Story

Read the intriguing transcription of the text illustrated on the McGowan family history parchment:

In Gaelic this surname is Mac An Ghabhann which means ‘son of the blacksmith.’ It is therefore understandable, although misleading, that the English translation of the name was often Smith. The Mac An Ghabhann were an important sept in the ancient territory of Breffny, and held sway over most of what is now County Cavan, In this area it is the name Smith which predominates today. MaGowan was used in preference, however, in the outlying areas of Breffny on the borders of Leitrim, Donegal, and Sligo, where the majority of Irish McGowans are found in modern times. There also exists a quite distinct O’ Gowan sept in East Ulster. It came originally from BallyGowan, a town lying in the fertile land to the west of that lough which the horsemen named Strangflord or ‘violent inlet’ because of its dangerous tides. In 1659 this surname was listed among the most prominent Irish names in Monaghan and Fermanagh. Two McGowans of emigrant families have achieved recognition: in America, Samuel McGowan was a nineteenth-century confederate soldier and Jurist, and James McGowan was a prominent New Zealand statesman who died in 1912. Other emigrant McGowan were the brothers, Mark and Thomas, who sailed on the ‘Charles & Harriott’ to New York in March 1804, and William, who sailed on the American ship ‘Commerce’ to Philadelphia in April of the same year.
