The Daly Coat Of Arms Story
Read the intriguing transcription of the text illustrated on the Daly family history parchment:
Of all Irish names, it is one, O’ Dalaigh, which deserves to rank the highest in the field of Gaelic literature; over the centuries it has produced a continuous stream of literary talent. The sept originated in the Barony of Magheradernon in the Country Westmeath, and it was near here that the first of these distinguished writers, a poet, Cuconacht O’ Dalaigh, presided over a bardic school in the early twelfth century. Branches of this sept moved to other parts of Ireland, their literary renown helping to establish them in their new area. Diamuid Og O’ Daly was given lands and privileges in Carbery when he became official poet to the McCathys of West Cork. Similarly, the O’ Dalys who settled in Cavan prospered in the service of the O’ Remys of Breffny a Daly family in County Galway became Barons Dunsandle, and were very powerful during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. One of the most famous of the Daly poets was the thirteenth century Donogh Mor O’ Daly, who has been referred to as ‘the Irish Ovid’ because of the fluidity of his religious verse. Another writer, Aengus O’ Daly, was murdered by an O'Meagher in 1617 owing to the fact that in his satire ‘The tribes of Ireland’ he had insulted members of that family. More recently Robert Daly, Bishop of Cashel, and John O’ Daly contributed to the Gaelic revival in the early 1800’s. Another ecclesiastic, the Rev. Dominic O’ Daly, pursued an eminently distinguished career as statesman and ambassador in seventeenth century Portugal. Richard Daley was a popular Mayor of Chicago in the 1950’s and 1960’s.
