The Brennan Coat Of Arms Story

Read the intriguing transcription of the text illustrated on the Brennan family history parchment:

This is the Anglicised form of two different Gaelic surnames - O Braonáin and Mac Branáin -which belonged to five quite distinct septs or clans. The two most important were located around East Roscommon and North Kilkenny, where their name survives into modern times. The latter sept were the Princes of Idough, whose power and lands declined considerably in time until, by the seventeenth century, they earned dubious distinction in Leinster, as leaders of bands of highwaymen and origands. The name also includes some illustrious individuals. The Reverend John Brennan (1625-1693) was Bishop of Waterford and Archbishop of Cashel, and a good friend of the Blessed Oliver Plankett. Though he was continually hounded by Priest hunters, he never left the diocese and his reports to Rome contain much interesting information about the Ireland of this day. Another John Brennan, born in 1768, was a satirist of Dublin doctors, and known as the 'Wrestling doctor' in our own century, Louis Brennan was the outstanding inventor of the guided torpedo and monorail railway: he did much of his work in Australia, while engaged on Research for the Government. Francis Brennan (1894-1968) was an American Cardinal Archbishop while William Joseph Brennan, who was born in 1906, is in associate Justine of the United States Supreme Court.
