About this Piece
For those who hold the west of Ireland in their hearts, this pendant symbolizes that attachment, featuring a Sterling Silver map of Ireland with a Rose Gold heart embedded in the province of Connaught.
Situated on Ireland's rugged Atlantic coast, Connaught (or Connacht) contains the counties Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, Roscommon and Sligo. It prides itself on having the largest percentage of Irish Gaelic speakers in Ireland, situated in the Gaeltacht areas. Due to a weaker British presence here, many Irish sports and arts held up strongly in this region historically while ebbing elsewhere. However, it was also hardest hit by the Great Famine in the mid-19th Century, losing almost a third of its population to death and emigration. Today however, it is a vibrant and cosmopolitan region that attracts visitors worldwide to its arts and culture hotspots, most noticeably Galway city which situated on the halfway point of the famous Wild Atlantic Way.
