The Crowley Coat Of Arms Story
Read the intriguing transcription of the text illustrated on the Crowley family history parchment:
The Gaelic form of this surname is O’ Cruadlaoich which is typical of the permanent surnames which came into being in the eleventh century. During this time many tribes took the name of their most distinguished leader or ancestor, adding the prefix ‘O’ which meant ‘descendant of’, to form their surname. In this case, the ancestor was cruadhlaoch, whose name literally meant ‘hard hero’. This sept was originally a branch of the Mcbermots, a great landowning sept, of Moyeburg in County Roscommon, which moved to County Cork and settled in the wild and Hilly territory around Dunmanway. There it became an important sept in its own right with a chief resident at Rishallow. The sept was renowned for its professional soldiers, who usually fought on the side of the powerful McCarthys, but by the mid-seventeenth century, much of their land had been wrested from them and had become the property of Richard Boyle, first Earl of Cork. The Crowleys have, however, maintained their ancient links with County Cork; so much so that, in Ireland, three-quarters of all Crowleys are born in this area, and the remaining quarter are from other South-Western Counties. Nicholas Joseph Crowley was the most outstanding member of this sept. He was born in 1819 and, by the time of his death in 1857, he was an eminent Irish Painter.
