Born in 1530 as Gráinne Ni Mhaille, Gráinne was queen of Umhaill (Connaght) in the west of Ireland, and a fearsome trader and pirate. Ireland was under English rule and Gráinne was a known rebel to the crown. In 1593 she travelled to England to appeal for the release of her two sons and brother. Queen Elizabeth agreed on the condition that Gráinne end her rebellion and piracy against England (which she reneged upon). Gráinne died in 1603 in her home place on Clare Island.

From the Gaelic Beannaigh an teach seo, meaning 'Bless this house/home'.
This framed Ogham Wish is a wonderful housewarming gift to be treasured! Each individual piece is handpainted on handmade paper by Ethel Kelly in Co. Roscommon, Ireland. Length: 19"
History of Ogham
Ogham (pronounced 'ohm') was the earliest form of writing in Ireland, existing from the 4th-9th centuries AD. Typically etched into stone or wood, it consists of a series of strokes along a line, where the strokes' quantity, length, and direction determine the letter. Most of the letters correspond to the Roman alphabet, with a few local additions, so in fact it's a translatable cypher rather than a language, read from the bottom-left upwards.
Some historians believe it may have been used as a secret alphabet that Roman Britain wouldn't be able to understand, while others suggest it may have been developed by early Christian communities as a form of shorthand. Most surviving examples are found on stone monuments in southern Ireland, though there are also some inscriptions in the west of Britain too, particularly in Wales.
About the Maker
Ogham writing is Ireland’s ancient script, often found inscribed on standing stones and in sacred places throughout Ireland’s rural landscape. Ethel Kelly’s award winning range of hand painted Ogham Wishes continues to enchant and delight. At her traditional workshop in Knockcroghery village in County Roscommon, each Ogham piece is individually painted by Ethel on handmade paper and beautifully framed in a contemporary black wooden frame.
While uniquely Celtic, Ogham Wishes have a universal appeal. Each Ogham gift is accompanied by an explanatory text outlining the history of Ogham writing with the Gaelic and English translations. Ogham Wishes artistically celebrates Ireland’s ancient culture and heritage, while Ogham can be used to mark almost any occasion.
The men of the Aran Islands used to carry their traditional fishing boats, known as a currach or naomhóg ('little saint') to the sea everyday, to bring home the catch of the day in order to sustain their community. They also wore the traditional Aran sweater woven with celtic knotwork, which represented prayers to keep them safe at sea. Lore has it that the seas around the islands were so dangerous that fishermen of times past wouldn't bother learning to swim, since they knew they'd have no chance against the wild currents.

To commemorate the Easter Rising Centenary (1916 - 2016), Mullingar Pewter have fashioned this beautiful limited edition mechanical pocket watch. With a fabulously detailed General Post Office on the cover of this watch - one of the most iconic sites of the uprising - this makes the perfect gift for anyone who loves Irish history.
This is a mechanical gent's watch designed to capture that early Victorian look as portrayed by the gents of that time. The watch itself is a manual wind-up and the workings can be seen from both the front face and back of the watch. The chain is 12" in length and has a pocket clip on the end designed to slip on to the cuff of a pocket.
History of the Easter Rising
The Easter Rising was an Irish rebellion against British occupation, fought over six days in April 1916. Members of the Irish Volunteers and the Irish Citizen Army launched a surprise takeover of multiple key locations, mostly in Dublin city, and publicly announced an independent Irish republic. Most famously, they took over the General Post Office (GPO) which has since become an icon of the rebellion. The British response was brutal, using heavy artillery and even a gunship to defeat the besieged rebels, destroying much of the city in the process. Eventually the rebels were forced to surrender.
Though militarily the uprising was a failure, the severe British response - a city in ruins, hundreds dead, rebel prisoners executed - helped to change the Irish public's mind towards their relationship with Britain, igniting further independence movements - both peaceful and more radical. The 1916 uprising is now (though not without controversy), recognized as a key step towards eventual Irish sovereignty.

In 1974, Paddy Collins revived the ancient craft of pewter manufacturing in Ireland, establishing his workshop in Mullingar, County Westmeath. Pewter has existed since ancient Egyptian and Roman times (as an alloy of tin mixed mainly with copper and antimony), and came to Ireland 800 years ago, becoming fashionable among the wealthy and for ceremonial purposes. Mullingar Pewter combines traditional handcrafted techniques that take many years to perfect, along with modern advances (modern pewter no longer contains lead, for instance), producing wonderful heritage gifts.
This wonderful jewelry box has been handcrafted using revived ancient pewter crafting techniques. Available in three different sizes:
Large (7" long) - Medium (5" long) - Small (3.5" long).
Choose your style - Available in Plain or Claddagh.
History of the Claddagh
The Claddagh (or Cladach, meaning 'the shore') features a crowned heart held by two hands - the heart represents love, the hands represent friendship, while the crown stands for loyalty. As far back as medieval times, engagement rings had been inscribed with clasped hands to signify one's fidelity, while the heart and crown were eventually added in the 18th century.
The Claddagh is named for the former fishing village that's now part of Galway city in the West of Ireland, where iconic Claddagh rings have since been produced for hundreds of years. Legend has it that in 1695, a local teenage silversmith called Richard Joyce became enslaved by Algerian pirates, and invented the Claddagh ring while in captivity.
Whatever the true origin, the Claddagh has since exploded in popularity among those desiring to celebrate their Irish heritage, appearing on many forms of jewellery and art from weddings rings to casual gifts of friendship.

About the Maker
Fellow artists Brian Scott-McCarthy and Kathleen Smyth founded Wild Goose Studio in 1970. Together with other leading Irish artists, they created a unique range of artifacts that take inspiration from Ireland's rich cultural heritage and the contemporary world. Each piece starts with an inspiring thought, an image or an emotion and is given a physical form by their craftspeople.
It all starts with the marriage of an idea or meaning with an image. One of the artists will then carve that image into a sculpted piece which becomes the original from which they create a mold, so they can then faithfully reproduce the image in full detail. The production process itself starts with metal powders such as bronze or cast iron which form the outer surface of the finished piece and the inner is created from a cold cast pouring. Once the piece is set, they polish it to reveal the beauty hidden beneath.
Many of their pieces reflect Ireland's Celtic history, with its stone carvings and evocative language, while others are inspired by contemporary authors, philosophers, and the moments and milestones in life that shape our human experience.

About the Maker
Studio Donegal is based in Kilcar, Co Donegal, along the Wild Atlantic Way where a tradition of handweaving and wool textiles has been in existence, dating back to the late 1700’s and earlier, prior to the Industrial Revolution. Textiles provided an important income for rural dwellers in the cottage industry, while local farmers supplemented their income by hand weaving tweed from the rough homespun yarn.
In the late 1980s, amid a struggling Irish textile industry, Kevin Donaghty and his wife Wendy were determined to preserve the tradition of hand weaving in Kilcar, so they took the brave step of taking over Studio Donegal from Connemara Fabrics, its previous owner. They leased the old buildings and purchased the hand looms, and armed with courage and determination, set about achieving their goal of creating a successful brand while staying true to the core value of hand weaving all their tweed.

About this Piece
A Pewter/Stainless Steel Mechanical Pocket Watch with Open Face Pewter Shamrock/Ireland Design.
This is a mechanical gents watch designed to capture that early Victorian look as portrayed by the gentlemen of that time. The watch itself is a manual wind-up and the workings can be seen from both the front face and back of the watch. The chain is 12" in length and has a pocket clip on the end designed to slip on to the cuff of a pocket.
History of the Shamrock
According to legend, St Patrick used the shamrock to teach the Celts about Christianity in the 5th century, with the three leaves representing the Holy Trinity. There were already several triple-deities in Irish mythology, which may have helped locals become accustomed to the concept of the Trinity.
The name derives from seamróg meaning 'young clover'. Since the 18th century it has been used as an official symbol of Irish heritage, becoming incorporated into numerous local flags, coats of arms, and sports emblems. It is now a yearly St Patrick's Day tradition for the Irish taoiseach (prime minister) to present the President of the United States with a crystal bowl of shamrocks in the White House, as a celebration of Ireland's deep connection to the United States due to the Irish diaspora.
