There are several theories about the uses of round towers. The most popular theory is that the towers were used for defensive purposes. The monks took their treasures and hid inside the tower where they would be safe from raiders. The doorway, high up in the wall, made it difficult for unwanted guests to gain entry. They were also symbols of prestige, power and wealth, not only of the ecclesiastical community that built them but also of their patrons.

Irish Monks believed that union with God could best be attained by withdrawal from civilization into harsh and isolated regions. Skellig Michael, off the Irish Kerry coast, was one of these isolated hazardous monastic island retreats founded about the 6th century by St. Fionan. To reach the most secure and remote areas on the island, the monks carved natural steps from the rock.
Skellig Michael has recently gained new global fame due to its appearance in the recent Star Wars films as the secluded home of Jedi Luke Skywalker.

The story goes that Fionn MacCumhaill, a legendary Irish warrior, created the iconic Giant's Causeway to fight the Scottish giant, Benandonner. When he got there, he discovered the Scottish giant was much bigger than himself, so Fionn quickly returned home, but Benandonner followed him back. Fionn's wife dressed her husband as a baby and when Benandonner saw the ‘baby', he fled back across the causeway, ripping it up as he went.
