Welcome to Clonmacnoise, a magical site nestled in the heart of Ireland, where time stands still for many many years!

Clonmacnoise is archaeological and monastic marvel that dates back over a thousand years. Situated on the banks of the mighty River Shannon, it's been an important spiritual and cultural center since its founding in the 6th century AD. Can you imagine the stories those ancient stones hold?

The journey to Clonmacnoise is an experience in itself. As I drove along the winding country roads, there was so much to see. The county of Offaly, my own home county, is alive with blooming heather and a scattering of families out rearing the turf, drying it for the cold winters ahead.

Upon arriving, I found myself in awe of the sprawling ruins that make up this ancient monastic settlement. It's said that Clonmacnoise was founded by St. Ciarán, a young lad with a vision, way back in 545 AD. The site grew to become a bustling hub of learning, religion, and craftsmanship, attracting scholars and pilgrims from all over Ireland and beyond.

Clonmacnoise boasted not one, not two, but seven churches! These sacred buildings, although weathered by the hands of time, still emanate an otherworldly charm. Standing amidst the ruins of the Cathedral, I couldn't help but imagine the devout souls who sought solace and enlightenment within those hallowed walls.

As I wandered through the monastic grounds, I stumbled upon some impressive stone crosses. These towering, intricately-carved wonders are true works of art. The most famous of the lot, the Cross of the Scriptures, stands tall, adorned with biblical scenes and ancient Gaelic inscriptions. It's like a history lesson etched in stone, showcasing the artistic prowess and devotion of our ancestors.

Clonmacnoise holds a hidden gem, the Round Tower. This cylindrical marvel, reaching for the heavens, has been standing tall since the 10th century. Its purpose, you ask? Well, it served as a place of refuge during times of raiders and marauders. Legend has it that the monks would scramble up the tower, removing the ladders behind them to keep the intruders at bay.

As the day wore on, I found solace by the riverside, at the tranquil waters of the River Shannon. It's said that Clonmacnoise's strategic location on the river made it a significant trading post and gateway to the west of Ireland. The river acted as a highway for travelers and merchants, bringing in news, goods, and new ideas from distant lands. It truly was the epicenter of ancient Ireland.

I departed with a heart full of appreciation for the resilient spirits that built and nurtured this extraordinary place. It's a testament to the indomitable Irish spirit, the deep-rooted connection to our past, and the desire to keep our heritage alive.

So, dear friends, the next time you find yourself wandering through the Emerald Isle, make sure to set your sights on Clonmacnoise. Lose yourself in Ireland's past, and uncover the magic of Ireland's ancient wonders. Let me know your own experience and thoughts in the comments below. I'd love to hear all about it.

And as I was saying above, Offaly is my County of origin myself. And from my own bog I have reared Irish turf to send to homes of Irish heritage across the world. Tis a scent of Ireland for the home. You can have yours at 50% off for only $7. Click here to get your piece of Ireland!
